Thoughts on Social Dialogue, Interview with François Delatronchette at ETF 2009 Congress
28 May 2009
The ETF sat down with Francois Delatronchette, from FGTE – CFDT, France, to discuss his impressions on the importance of Social Dialogue. Although he has attended other international congresses, namely that of EPSU and PSI, this is the first time he has participated in an ETF Congress.
Francois Delatronchette: “Social Dialogue, whether it be carried out on a local, national or European level, is very important. I was speaking with one of my brothers, Milorad Sugic, President of the Social Dialogue Committee of Road Transport on behalf of the ETF, about some of the problems found within the sector. Drivers are grossly underpaid for their work, and the working conditions to which they are subjected are substandard!
Social Dumping is rampant, and I find it incomprehensible that people should be subjected to such practices in this day and age. The only way that we can ameliorate the working environment for drivers in the Road Transport sector is through mediation on a European level, and this entails increased Social Dialogue. To be efficient at Social Dialogue, trade unions must promote the unity of transport workers under shared goals and experiences. However, a major challenge to effective Social Dialogue will be the eventual inclusion of the Logistics sector.
I believe that Social Dialogue is an integral part of a truly “social Europe,” where social rights are as important as economic freedoms. The ETF has chosen a perfect moment to organize its Congress, being that European elections will take place only a week after the Congress’ conclusion, on 7 June 2009. My union, FGTE – CFDT has already evaluated the candidates on the basis of their views on sustainable transport, climate change and public services. I encourage other trade unions to do the same. The upcoming elections should be taken seriously, as there is much to be gained by electing candidates who believe in a social Europe. “
