ETF Statement: European Parliament votes in favour of the inclusion of self-employed drivers

10 October 2008

Yesterday, the European Parliament voted in favour of the inclusion of self-employed drivers within the scope of Directive 2002/15/EC on the organisation of the working time of persons performing mobile road transport activities.

This comes only months after a similar response, by the European Economic and Social Committee, vis-à-vis a report by the European Commission1 on which basis the European institutions will have to consider extending the scope of the directive to the above mentioned category of drivers.

The ETF welcomes the European Parliament commitment to act for more safety on roads, to eliminate distortions of competition in the sector, to rule out discrimination in terms of health and safety, pay and working conditions for drivers.
