ETF expresses solidarity with Russian Dockers’ Union

12 June 2007

The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) learnt today with great concern of the assault suffered by a member of the Dockers’ Union of Russia (DUR) last week in Moscow.

Mikhail Chesalin, Chairman of the DUR’s branch in the city, was beaten and repeatedly stabbed from behind by an unknown number of assailants as he was about to enter the office at 10:30 on 7 June 2007. He was left lying unconscious on the ground.

Expressing strong condemnation at this violent attack, the ETF extended a solidarity message to Mikhail, officers and members of the DUR.

“We will ensure, also through our member unions, that this outrageous fact is not added to the list of unpunished crimes affecting trade unionists worldwide”, said Philippe Alfonso, ETF Political Secretary for the Dockers’ Section.

The ETF has backed the International Transport Workers’ Federation’s demands for a proper investigation and has sent protest letters to the Governor and the Director of the Port of Kaliningrad.
