First victory in Handle With Care campaign
1 November 2006
The ETF is celebrating a victory in its fight to defend ground handlers’ jobs after the European Commission abandoned plans to revise a directive that could have led to further privatisation and outsourcing of work.
The Commission opted to stop its planned revision of a 1996 directive on ground handling for the time being as a result of the failure to achieve a consensus. The move follows the ETF’s Handle With Care campaign, which lobbied for quality jobs and against the risk that whole swathes of airport support services could be sold off and outsourced with no guarantee that workers’ job rights would be respected.
ETF General Secretary Eduardo Chagas commented: “The Commission has backed away from these plans, and that’s a win for us and for all those working to defend quality services in airports. However, we won’t let that stop us continuing to make the case for secure services with a secure and trained workforce.”
