Why transport trade unions prepare change

To strengthen as a sector

The economic reality is charachterised by an increasing globalisation
and growing instability due to the economic crisis. Developing alternative
strategies can tackle its significant impact on the transport sector.
The increasing importance to deal with the consequences of climate
change asks for innovative working methods. The transport sector must
take its responsibility in contributing to a more sustainable economy.
To make full use of the high job creation potential in the transport sector,
it is essential to attract more young workers and women workers.

To strengthen as a social power

Stronger trade unions enable transport workers to receive better social
protection and obtain improved working conditions.
Being better adapted to the needs of women workers and
young workers increases the attractiveness of trade unions and its
membership.
It ensures a better representation of its members and makes
the workers’ voice sound louder and more imperative.

To take a head start

An increased influence in the political debate requires transport trade
unions that take the lead and act in unity.
The European transport trade unions take the initiative in defining a
shared vision and action plan for a more sustainable sector.

How to prepare change?

The TransUnion project acts in a parallel way on 3 different frontlines, building up 3 pillars for a more sustainable sector, namely the climate change pillar, the young workers pillar and the women workers pillar.

Via an elaborated research and consultation process in every ETF section, the Transunion project will develop an ETF position paper on Transport & Climate Change that will be discussed in the Transunion Climate Change Conference. Every ETF section will take part in the debate: Civil Aviation, Maritime Transport, Ports & Docks, Fisheries, Inland Waterways, Tourism, Road Transport, Railways and Urban Public Transport.

In the Young workers pillar, the project will draft a picture of the current situation of young workers via the elaboration of a survey involving all ETF affiliates. It will gather useful data on young workers’ positions and concerns. By means of two seminars, the project has the objective to gather good practices to identify the challenges and attract more young workers to the sector and the trade unions. The results of the survey and the seminars will be presented in the first ETF Young Transport Workers conference. Please click here to download the seminar and conference documents.

The project collects all existing relevant training materials on women workers in order to develop a training package for women representatives. The training package has the objective to better prepare transport trade unions in encouraging women workers to work in the transport sector. The package will be refined by testing it during two dedicated women transport workers seminars. The final result will be discussed and presented at the Women Transport Workers conference.

The Transunion project concludes in a final Social Dialogue conference in which the outcome of the three pillars will be confronted with the employers’ views on the three areas of the project.
