Our people

Organisations and individuals representing fishers

The fisheries section is an important part of the ITF’s activities. Its focus is to bring fishers’ living and working standards in line with other industries. Exploitative practices experienced on board fishing vessels mean fishers’ lives and livelihoods need to be represented at both a grassroots and international level.

Structure

A conference normally takes place every four years and a fisheries section committee usually meets once a year. There are also regional committees for Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

International representation

The fisheries section is active in a number of international organisations working within specific fields. These include:

  • Fisheries management – United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the International Whaling Commission (IWC)
  • The social dimension – International Labour Organization (ILO)
  • The safety aspects – International Maritime Organization (IMO)
