The ITF Summer Schools, established after the 1998 Congress in Delhi as part of the Mobilising Solidarity programme, play an important role in strengthening the international perspective of union leaders and activists. ITF affiliated unions have been finding that many of the issues which affect their members at a local level frequently have an international dimension, which requires an international response. The summer school provides training on international issues such as privatisation, transport restructuring and globlisation.
The 2008 Summer School was held exclusively for unions in the Asia/Pacific region. It was held in Mumbai, India from 22-26 September. The ITF affiliate the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) hosted the summer school at its facility in Panvel, Mumbai. Other ITF affiliates in India also contributed to the summer school through the National Coordination Committee.
The regional focus of the summer school provided a unique opportunity for the affiliates to learn from each other and evolve a more strategic and targeted approaches to `Organising’, given that many countries of the region have become a major force in driving the global economy.
Full details of the summer school will be available to download once the report is completed.
*The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) in Germany is a supporter of ITF summer schools.
