Unionists put the spotlight on education as an organising tool

The role of education in supporting and building workers’ participation in unions was the key focus of the recent conference in the UK. A report of the conference in English, French and Spanish can be found below.

Educators and organisers from different sectors and regions attended the ITF education and organising conference in Surrey, UK, from 28-30 June. There they debated new learning tools and ways of reaching workers and building activism. Workshop sessions concluded that interactive and low-cost education approaches were needed to build an organising culture in unions.

The conference also gave birth to the ITF Organising Academy. This will involve organiser exchanges, knowledge banks, a network and organising project mentors. Through the ITF, the knowledge bank will enable affiliated unions to share successful organising initiatives, so that other affiliates can draw on ideas and lessons when they consider their own campaigns.

In addition, the conference saw the launch of the ITF organising manual, which aims to increase worker participation and enhance union power.

Alana Dave, ITF education officer, commented: “Bringing educators and organisers together results in better ideas about how we build worker participation, union structures and worker power in the long term.”

Ingo Marowsky, ITF organising globally coordinator, added: “The ITF plays an important role in stimulating organising and coordination where it is needed to exert pressure on multinational companies and in key transport hubs and corridors.”

This was second ITF education conference but the first joint conference with the ITF organising globally department. The conference formed part of the global educators’ project supported by the solidarity support organisation LO-TCO in Sweden.
