Global projects often have various components, which include an international element, regional, sub regional and national. Currently the ITF has the following global education projects. Click on each one for detailed information.

Promoting quality public transport

The purpose of the proposed project is to build the collective knowledge and capacity of trade unions in urban transport to campaign for quality public transport services and to organise and build strong unions.

The objective in the long-term is for unions to promote sustainable transport alternatives in response to the economic, environmental and social consequences of the failed neoliberal models of transport restructuring globally, including high quality public transport which provides decent work and conditions for transport workers.

The project objectives are:

To build an understanding amongst urban transport unions of different models of public transport provision (including public and private roles in investment, infrastructure development and service delivery) and their impact on employment.
To analyse target multinational companies involved in public transport provision.
To develop trade union campaigning strategies to promote quality public transport services and decent jobs and conditions for transport workers.
To develop trade union bargaining strategies to secure decent conditions and rights for public transport workers.
To build alliances between GUFs, trade unions and other civil society organizations to promote quality public services, including public transport.

The project will produce materials for the ITF transport restructuring toolkit.
The ITF is developing this project in collaboration with Public World. Public World is an international social enterprise.

Building the capacity of unions to respond to climate change and transport.

Transport is a significant and growing source of carbon emissions. A resolution adopted at the ITF Congress in Mexico in 2010 resolved to mobilise transport unions in support of progressive climate change policies. There was also a call for the ITF to develop and implement a comprehensive education programme.

The ITF Education Department is currently implementing an education project on climate change with support from the LO-TCO in Sweden. The project has the following objectives:

Raise the awareness of transport trade union leaders and activists about issues related to climate change and transport.
Begin to identify the core elements of a long-term trade union response in different transport sectors.

Project Period: 2010-2013
Target group: trade union leaders and activists.

Global HIV/AIDS and Transport Workers’ Project

For many years, the ITF has addressed the issue of HIV/AIDs in the workplace and the vulnerability of transport workers. The long-term objective is to significantly contribute to the reduction of new HIV infections among transport workers and their families worldwide. ITF projects on HIV/AIDs are supported by FNV Mondiaal in the Netherlands.

Our current global HIV/AIDS project has the following objectives:

Mainstream HIV/AIDS by integrating it as an issue into unions’ core activities;
Lobby and advocacy with global, regional and national policy makers to reduce transport workers’ vulnerability to HIV by facilitating faster border crossings, and more resting, recreational and medical facilities.
Lobby, advocacy and negotiation with employers, including targeted multinational companies and global and regional employers’ organizations to implement workplace policies and programmes on HIV/AIDS.
Develop partnerships and linkages with existing and new HIV prevention and care projects so that these projects cater for the needs and demands of transport workers.
Improve the knowledge, skills and competencies of trade union leaders to address HIV/AIDS as an integral component of organising campaigns and to engage employers on HIV/AIDS workplace interventions.
Build the knowledge and awareness of transport workers, their families and affiliated communities thereby encouraging them to know their HIV status and facilitate access to the necessary care and treatment.

Target group: Trade union leadership, educators, organisers and women activists. Project period: 2009-2012

Training the Trainers: Global Educators’ Project

The ITF education department continues to implement a global training the trainers’ programme for transport unions with support from the LO-TCO in Sweden.

The objectives are:

To develop the organising and campaigning capacities and skills of union educators and activists
To develop a 4-year education strategy to strengthen strategic organising and campaigning in transport unions

Target Group: Union educators and activists
Cooperating Organisation: LO-TCO
Project Period: 2009-2012

Materials have been developed through the project. Click here to view the materials.

Another key outcome of the project has been the building of a global educators’ network. The network consists of education co-ordinators/officers and the purpose is to exchange information, education materials as well as to raise the profile of trade union education activities amongst ITF affiliates. In this regard it is anticipated more educators will contribute to the activities of the network.
