Future of Africa’s aviation industry tackled

A meeting jointly sponsored by the ITF and the ILO (International Labour Organization) will close in Kenya today with the release of the first ever policy paper on labour and aviation in Africa.
The meeting, held in Nairobi from 5 to 7 June, attracted 30 participants from nine countries in East and Sub-Saharan Africa (a West African meeting will follow).
The policy paper underlines the message that a healthy aviation industry is a key factor in economic growth for the whole African continent. It also supports the Yamousoukro Decision, which opens African skies to other African countries – so long as trade unions are involved. On the same terms it also backed a project for East African integration which begins with participation by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
The paper also reiterated trade unions’ support for training and for safety and security, and that these must be at the forefront of all dealings with passengers. Additionally, it warned of a brain drain that is skimming off skilled workers. The paper will be presented to African governments and be displayed on the ITF’s website at www.itfglobal.org/civil-aviation/index.cfm
Speaking from Nairobi, Ingo Marowsky, Secretary of the ITF’s Civil Aviation Section, commented: “The Kenyan Minister of Transport, Chirau Ali Mwakwere, was one of the speakers, and warned that at a time when change is taking place in African aviation, workers must be consulted. His presence showed that the message is being heard that the challenges facing this sector are best addressed by workers, governments and employers working together.
“We are open for dialogue – without it African aviation cannot prosper. Although we were disappointed that Afraa (African Airlines Association, the employers’ organisation) decided not to join us, we are heartened to see that their meeting in Tunisia seemed to be delivering a very similar message.
“East African aviation personnel today made clear their backing for a strong aviation industry not just for individual nations but for all Africa. We invite airlines and governments alike to enter into a dialogue to make it so.”ENDS
