AP Moeller-Maersk network launched

8 Agosto 2006

ITF delegates today unanimously agreed to set up an AP Moeller-Maersk worldwide network of union activists and officials.

Earlier, speakers at a well-attended informal meeting of affiliates from across the transport sectors stressed the importance of following up Congress resolutions with action.

Opening the meeting, Ron Carver of the IBT (US) said that although some unions had good relations with the company, “Maersk comes down with an iron fist on workers trying to secure union recognition for the first time”.

He pointed to the fact that the company has a code of conduct, which clearly states its commitment to human and social rights. This made Maersk a prime target for putting the principles of Organising Globally into practice.

Describing the objectives of the network, Tim Beaty, IBT’s Director of Global Strategies, stressed that it should be “flexible enough to respond quickly to situations, action-orientated and should avoid excessive bureaucracy”.

However, it was also noted that care had to be taken not to commit to projects without sufficient resources to fulfil them. Frank Leys, Secretary of the Dockers’ Section, emphasised that the network must operate in close consultation with all members and sections to ensure a “win-win” situation for all involved.

Moving the motion in the Plenary session of Congress, Carver said the resolution should be dedicated to the memory of José Gilberto Soto. The IBT organiser was murdered in El Salvador in November 2004 on the eve of meeting truckers as part of a union-organising drive employed by, among other companies, AP Moeller-Maersk.

The first meeting of the AP Moeller-Maersk Network will be organised by 3F (Denmark) for next spring in Copenhagen, the location of Maersk’s headquarters.
