Delegates call for immediate ceasefire

8 August 2006

Congress voted overwhelmingly today in favour of an emergency motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

Moving the motion, Bob Crow of RMT (UK) said the resolution did not take sides. “We are against terrorism, and we should also be against countries destroying other countries with weapons of mass destruction. We are aiming to organise globally to improve the living standards of working men and women. But without peace, you won’t achieve any of those aims.”

He added: “Our resolution should send out the message that every transport worker in the world supports peace. The only war we want to see is a war against hunger and poverty.”

Some speakers requested that the suffering of innocent Israeli communities affected by Hezbollah attacks should be reflected in the wording of the resolution. Others were concerned that the resolution’s condemnation of the appalling scale of the destruction of Lebanon should be more strongly stated.
The motion was amended to pay tribute to transport workers supporting humanitarian efforts in Israel as well as Lebanon.

The resolution also calls on the ITF to provide assistance to transport workers’ unions in Lebanon during the process of reconstruction and recovery. It expresses the belief that lasting peace in the Middle East will only be ensured through the implementation of UN resolutions and the full implementation of a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.
