Aviation groups agree on setting benchmarks

05/08/06

Fatigue and other working conditions issues debated in Friday’s Civil Aviation Section Conference were taken up by two specialist working groups at Congress yesterday.

The cabin crew workshop, chaired by the AFA-CWA’s Pat Friend (US), and the air traffic services workshop, chaired by Ruth Marlin of NATCA (US), called for the ITF to establish working conditions benchmarks to reflect best practice in the industry. Research to determine the benchmarks has already started via an online survey.

Representatives of both sectors of the industry welcomed steps towards achieving licensing. The cabin crew forum noted this in Europe, and debated further issues associated with the International Civil Aviation Organization. New air traffic controllers’ licensing proposals meant good progress, explained Marlin. However, unions needed to ensure licence revocation could not be used to penalise or threaten ATS workers but rather was part of a safety management system, she added.
