March 8th: Nepal, Turkey - Women's day rallies targeted
Millions of trade union women worldwide are celebrating international women's day. Marring the positive activities, however, have been interventions by police during women's day events.
In Nepal, trade unionists have been targeted during a huge rally for women's day - held with the permission of the authorities by the Nepal Trade Union Congress and other trade unions. Security personal interfered, revoking the permit to hold the rally.
"Hundreds of civil securities personal are surrounding the program venue" said the Nepal Trade Union Congress. "We have strongly condemned Government's action and requested the full exercise of trade union rights and human rights"
Police also brutally reacted to protesters demanding equality rights for women, at a demonstration held in Turkey on Sunday 6 March 2005
ITF Activities show strong unions need women
Sixty-five ITF unions in 38 countries have been campaigning in this, the fifth year that ITF affiliated unions all over the world have marked the 'Women Transporting the World' campaign on 8th March.
The overall aim of the ITF campaign is to assist in organising and recruiting young women transport workers and to increase ITF affiliate activities designed to fight for women transport workers' basic rights. In 2005, the ITF is asked all its unions to join again in campaigning worldwide under the campaign slogan 'Strong Unions need Women'.
