World maritime day event will take place at the Stella Maris Seafarer's Centre on the 30th september from 12.30 to 15:00. Guest speaker will be James Kennan, Queen’s Counsel and former Attorney General/Transport Minister in the Victorian Labour Government. There will be an official blessing prior to his address by three ministers/priests At 15:30 a delegation from the Melbourne Port Welfare Committee consisting of Matt Purcell, Jim Beggs, (Chairman and ex-President of the Waterside Workers Federation, Victoria, Nigel Poreous and Bevil Lunson (Missions to Seafarers) and Seamus Quinn and Rom Klucera (Stella Maris Seafarers’ Centre) will meet with the Consul General of the American Embassy in Victoria. The delegation will present him with the model open letter in support of ILO Convention 185.

“We will have a march through Sydney following a jazz band to the Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour. Among the speakers will be Paddy Crumlin, General Secretary of the MUA (Maritime Union of Australia) and Martin Ferguson, the Shadow Minister for Transport. He will take the opportunity to announce the Federal Labor Party's policy on shipping, which includes the protection of foreign seafarers to be ensured shore leave and access to welfare providers and union representatives. I am still waiting advice from the US ambassador to Australia on whether he will accept a small delegation from the ITF and maritime unions to present him with the form letter concerning the treatment of foreign seafarers in US ports.”

A joint letter from the BTB, ACV Transcom and Royal Belgian Shipping Association has been sent to the American Embassy requesting a meeting on 30 September. The BTB has contacted the Belgian Minister of Transport explaining the issue and requesting ratification of ILO 185 without delay.

“ The Offshore meeting delegates will be attending the Government meetings on maritime security in St Johns on Maritime Day.
This event will will be in support of Canadian maritime unions and will be attended by the Canadian Labour Congress.
On Tuesday, Malcolm Guy and Michele Smith, co-producers of the film Turbulent Waters, will be on Vancouver’s no. 1 radio call in program, The Bill Good Show. Bill has invited us to go on live with them as well. Our time slot is 11:30 Vancouver time and 16:00 in St Johns.
I will be covering: the film, maritime day observance and maritime security regulations that are going to limit our inspectors’ ability to access.
I am also working on having the ships horns sound at noon on the 30th. It’s going to be a good day here.”

Hong Kong Seafarers’ Co-ordination Committee (HSCC) will join forces with the Hong Kong Shipowners Association to present a joint letter to the US Consulate General, Hong Kong on 30th September 2004, concerning the difficulties of seafarers for having entry visas and landing permits due to concerns about maritime security.
In addition, the HSCC are going to arrange a meeting with the Secretary for Security, Security Bureau, the Government of Hong Kong SAR in order to promote the ratification of ILO Convention No 185 and to urge its acceptance and implementation.

World Maritime Day event will take place at Stella Maris Seafarer's Center, Tamatave, on the 30th September in the morning beginning with an official blessing for all seafarers around the world conducted by the national Director of Stella Maris, Mr Randrianasoavina Félix, followed by a visit to the port guided by Regional board staff members of Sygmma in Tamatave Bosela Tsimijaly, Manjovory Philo with journalists to cover the activities planned to show the importance of this date for seafarers and also the sounding of ships’ whistles at 12 00 local time. Maltese companies that own Maltese flagged ships have asked their vessels to sound their whistles at 12:00 local time in whichever port they are in around the world.
The Maritime Transport and Port Employees’ Union will participate in the World Maritime Day event jointly with the Ministry of Shipping in Mauritius. An exhibition on Safety and Security will be held and the Minister of Shipping will read the message from the Secretary General of the IMO at the opening ceremony on Monday 27th September. On the 30th of September 2004, a special meeting of PSU National Council will take place.
It is devoted to presentation and discussion on 185 ILO Convention and the USA administration’s restrictive policy of issuing visas for seafarers.
Polish Seafarers’ Union will discuss and adopt a motion on the subject of ILO 185 Convention ratification by Poland and on new regulation of issuing visas by the USA for seafarers. That motion will be presented to Polish Prime Minister. We will also send a letter to the appropriate department of the United States of America administration regarding the case of crew list visas elimination. In addition, our Union is going to arrange sound off by the ships in main ports of Poland - Gdynia, Szczecin and Swinoujscie at noon.”

Report from Albert Napier: “World Maritime Day Event is being celebrated by seafarers in the Seychelles from 22 September to 30 September.
Activities realised so far include an exhibition on the maritime history of Seychelles, Quiz, Sport Activities etc. This was coordinated by the National Heritage Division in collaboration with the Coast Guard, Seychelles Fishing Authority, Maritime Training School, the Apostleship of the Sea and the Ministry of Local Government and Culture.
Sunday 25th September 2004, the Seychelles Apostleship of the Sea jointly with the Seychelles Seafarer's Welfare, Seychelles Fishing Authority and Mission to Seamen celebrated a holy mass for seafarer's and their family at the Fishing Port, Victoria. Theme of the mass was "Securite et Droit de Debarque" which was presided by Father Edouard of the Roman Catholic Church and Father Lala of the Anglican church.
After the mass, there was a blessing of all fishing boats at anchor plus an audio visual exhibition on safety and security at sea.

As a run-up to World Maritime Day, Satawu members are today (Tuesday 28th September) marching on the Department of Transport (provincial) in Port Elizabeth, where a memorandum will be handed to the regional manager. One of the demands in the memorandum will be that government immediately takes steps to ratify ILO Convention 185 concerning seafarers' identity documents.

Some 80 participants from maritime authorities, shipping companies, academics and transport workers' unions will be invited to the seminar to discuss issues including The Practice of ISPS Code in Taiwan; ILO Convention No185; and Responses to the ISPs and ILO Convention No185 in Hong Kong. T he President of the NCSU, Fang Fu-Liang, will let all participants signing their names under the open letter for the AIT (American Institute in Taiwan). Port authority rules mean that ships’ sirens cannot be sounded in port due to political tension in the Taiwan Straits.
