The dispute

The ITF has been informed that an organising drive led by ITF affiliated road tranport union, TÜMTIS has been met with escalating aggression against UPS drivers in Turkey. After unanimously adopting an emergency resolution at the ITF Congress in Mexico City last week, the ITF is now calling on its affiliates worldwide to take lawful solidarity action on 1 September 2010. For further information please contact urata_mac@itf.org.uk.

The ITF is firmly backing TÜMTIS in their struggle against UPS. The ITF has written to the CEO of UPS, local UPS management in Turkey, and the Turkish Prime Minister to raise concerns but there has been no response. Approach your local UPS management and urge them to contact the UPS headquarters in Atlanta, USA, before the Action Day to resolve this case as soon as possible. Download a model letter here and locate your nearest UPS office here. Unions from around the world have sent messages of support and international trade union delegations have also visited the UPS picket-line in Turkey to show their solidarity.

The ITF will be monitoring the situation and requests that ITF affiliates stay on alert should we need to mobilise further action.

What you can do
The ITF is calling on its affiliates organising in all transport sectors to mobilise every possible lawful action in order to show solidarity with UPS workers in Turkey, to demand that the sacked workers are reinstated unconditionally and that steps are taken to ensure that no further victimisation takes place at UPS and its subsidiaries.

Let us know about your activities
The ITF is calling on unions to let us know about planned solidarity actions and to designate a contact person. This union contact person will be sent campaign information and will be contacted on 1st September so we can provide real time updates to TÜMTIS and ITF unions worldwide.

Background
In recent months the ITF affiliate TÜMTIS has taken steps to unionise UPS operations in Turkey.
Since November 2009, more than 150 employees in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir have been dismissed without any application of the procedures stipulated by Turkish law. All of the dismissed workers are union members or sympathisers. The ITF has also been informed that the remaining workers face constant victimisation and harassment in order to dissuade them from joining the union, and some  have even been forced to resign.

On 2 July, the conflict escalated in Izmir when it was reported that a manager of a sub-contractor pulled out his gun and started shooting in front of a notary. For further information on the dispute see www.itfglobal.org/solidarity/UPSTurkey.cfm.
