The union Federación de Camioneros started their activities at 08:00 on 1 September. An open assembly was organised outside the UPS distribution centre in Buenos Aires by the union members. They waved flags and distributed pamphlets in support of TÜMTIS. It is reported that the access to the distribution centre was blocked for a few hours. (Phone report by Mariela Dilema)
USA
ITF affiliates in cities such as New York City, Detroit and Chicago have mobilised their activists to the streets on the Action Day. The common leaflet they published cites that the fired workers make only US$ 316 - 474 a month. The unionists protested that the dismissals by the UPS management in Turkey are unacceptable and demanded an immediate dialogue between the union and UPS to settle this dispute. Austria
ITF-affiliated vida, together with the white colour union GPA-djp, held a demonstration in front of the main office and distribution centre of UPS in the cargo area at Vienna International Airport in the morning of 1 September. Between 06:00 and and 07:00, more than 90 delivery cars which entered the distribution centre to pick up parcels for their tours were stopped and informed about the situation in Turkey. The unions also used the opportunity to talk about UPS in Austria. A leaflet with demands in solidarity with workers in Turkey was prepared. All the UPS staff were given coffee on the street in front of the building. A long traffic jam was reported as well as a short delay to the delivery of the air cargo into the distribution centre. Campaign materials were prepared in German, Turkish and Serbo-Croat. A big banner - with the slogan "we demand justice" in Turkish - was displayed in front of the office building.
The works council of air traffic management in Austria also participated in the demonstration and informed all controllers working on the day shift about the action. On the arrival of the UPS plane at Vienna Airport, air traffic control staff welcomed the pilot in the spirit of the action day and informed him about the solidarity action in Vienna. Groundhandling staff from Vienna International Airport (Cargo) distributed the leaflet to the loaders, container handlers, logistic staff and truck drivers who work for UPS at the airfield. A great sense of solidarity was noticeable. The UPS management seemed to be aware about the conflict in Turkey and expressed their view that the conflict in Turkey was a conflict between a local trade union with the subcontractor rather than with UPS. Germany
Activists from ver.di, NGG and IG-Metal distributed factsheets in front of UNSPED in Kassel and UPS Herne on 1 September. In the evening, an action was conducted in front of the factory gates of the UPS base in Cologne Airport. Workers were informed about the situation in Turkey and they were interested to find out how their employer was acting in Turkey. Representatives from local migrant groups also attended the events. Switzerland
UNIA sent their protest letter to Scott Davis, the CEO of UPS and sent a copy to the local country manager. (Email report by Nick Bramley)
