Page context: World AIDS Day 2006

Since 1988 World AIDS Day has been commemorated around the globe on 1st December - to raise awareness of the global AIDS epidemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. HIV/AIDS has a triple impact on the transport sector. It affects the transport workers, their families, communities, the enterprise concerned and the economy as a whole. Some groups of workers are particularly more vulnerable to acquiring and transmitting HIV infection because of the nature and conditions of the work. Transport workers are such a group-whether they work on land, sea or air routes. Although transport workers all over the world are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, little attention has been paid to reducing that vulnerability. It is now well established that without the active involvement of transport workers and their unions, it is impossible to develop a viable response to the pandemic.

Starting from World AIDS Day, 1st December 2006, the ITF will be asking all its unions to join in a long-term campaign to get involved in HIV/AIDS programmes and activities to prevent future infections and provide care and support to infected members and their families. The objectives of this campaign are to move HIV/AIDS into unions core programmes and activities and to encourage unions to lobby to establish HIV as a workplace issue. The ITF strongly believes that, with the organisational strength of over 600 affiliated unions in 142 countries, we can make a difference and keep transport workers and their families healthy and safe from HIV/AIDS.

Previous Campaigns

ITF collaborates with other Global Union Federations (GUF)

This year we are also collaborating with other Global Union Federations (GUF) and World AIDS Campaign (WAC) to observe World AIDS Day in order to increase the profile of “HIV/AIDS is a workplace issue.” Although like the ITF, each Global Unions might have its own campaigning issues and priorities, the broad theme will be: “Universal access to HIV services in the workplace by 2010”. This theme will be the common thread between all the global unions. WAC will distribute World AIDS Day materials to all the global union affiliates. You can also visit World AIDS Campaign website www.worldaidscampaign.info for further details.
