Airline unions step up global agreements
16 June 2004: Unions at British Airways, Iberia, American Airlines, Qantas, Aer Lingus, Finnair, LanChile and Cathay Pacific area are all set to lobby their airlines to sign up to a global code of conduct on social responsibility.
The Oneworld Alliance unions discussed the code of conduct at a New York summit at the beginning of June and agreed on a consensus text. The code focuses on union rights, anti-discrimination and safety issues.
The move follows historic developments last month. A landmark seal of approval was given by CSA Czech Airlines to a similar code, signed in Prague, in the Czech Republic, during a conference of ITF SkyTeam Alliance unions on 17-19 May (see picture). Airline chief Jaroslav Tvrdík welcomed the opportunity to be the first of the Skyteam airlines to endorse the agreement.
Talks on codes of conduct are ongoing with the management of TUI Group, a European network of charter airlines, and are on the Star Alliance unions’ agenda, in line with the ITF’s commitment to explore international framework agreements.
ITF aviation secretary designate Ingo Marowsky welcomed the New York discussions as “a step towards global social rights in airlines”.
