STOP INJURIES! ...

Your luggage may be injuring the people who help you to arrive at that beach in the sun or your important business meeting.

What you can do

Show your support with aviation workers;

- Remember the ‘Pack Less’ principle when getting ready to fly - simply reduce the amount you pack – less than 23 kilos is best.

- Use the 'Pack Less' luggage labels to show airlines that you support the campaign to stop injuries among aviation workers. Download here >> or alternatively order hard copies here >>

- ITF affiliates attending our 42nd Congress in Mexico City, don't forget to 'Pack Less' and make sure your delegation uses the "Pack Less' luggage labels, available here, in your congress pack or order hard copies here >>

Why PACK LESS

Many workers are involved in getting you into the air, to your destination and home again. All along the line, workers are handling your luggage – those who check you in at the airport, load your suitcases into the plane’s baggage hold and ensure that your hand luggage is safely stowed away in the cabin. However, few people realise that baggage handlers are four times more likely than other workers in similar jobs to suffer muscular skeletal injuries because of the conditions in which they work. When these are not formally recognised as industrial injuries – which often happens – they can lose out financially as well as face health issues. reducing the amount of they pack – even if they already have less than 23 kilos.

Aviation workers explain why baggage weight limits matter, read more here and watch the film here.

 The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the international body for airlines, recommends that individual bag weight should be restricted to 23 kilos internationally. Cabin crew also face problems when lifting heavy carry-on luggage. ITF and ETF aviation unions are campaigning for the 23 kilo limit to be applied as a strict maximum for hold baggage, and for other measures to be adopted to reduce workers' exposure to heavy lifting.

PACK LESS and make a difference

As a passenger you can help stop injuries among baggage handlers and other aviation workers simply by reducing the amount of you pack – even if they already have less than 23 kilos.

Taking less luggage with you when you fly will lighten your own load and if many people follow the ‘Pack Less’ principle, it will mean the aircraft use less fuel and pollute less.

Remember, most airlines charge more for heavier luggage.
