New Head of Group Accounting appointed
4 July 2009
At time of severe cost cutting
Jesper Cramon is taking up the position of Head of Group Accounting at AP Moller-Maersk on 1 August.
He replaces Per Møller, who is retiring after 22 years at Maersk.
Cramon, 40, joined Maersk in 2003. He has held various positions in the group’s Accounting Department. He has been CFO of Maersk container line subsidiary Safmarine since April 2006.
Cramon is taking on his role at a challenging time. Earnings are under pressure, especially in container shipping, and costs are being squeezed.
Maersk CEO Nils Smedegaard Andersen says in the group’s employee magazine that people should get used to the new culture of tighter cost control. Even when the good times return, there will be no going back to free and easy spending.
The economic crisis has provided the opportunity to examine the entire organisation constructively, he says. “I think it is fair to say that when the economy was booming we were spending money too freely. Now the economic crisis is now forcing us to cut all unnecessary costs and reduce spending considerably.
“We can leave no stone unturned. And just as importantly, it is not just a question of saving costs right now. We want the whole organisation to adapt to a new mindset. This means that there will be no going back to old habits once the economy has recovered.”
The company caused uproar in March when it told ships to stop buying paper napkins for mealtimes and use kitchen roll instead, to save money.
