Most unions not rushing to congratulate him though…
Denmark’s arguably most widely admired businessman has turned 95, and while there are plenty of glowing words about Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller - the man who is a senior partner of the AP Moller-Maersk group that his father Arnold Peter started, many trade unionists are not falling over themselves to join in the adulation.
In fact, most comments are not publishable, not surprising given the big job cuts announced by Maersk in recent months.
Communist newspaper Arbejderen (‘The Worker’) noted in an article how AP Moller-Maersk had managed to obtain big subsidies from the Danish state – in the form of tax breaks in the tonnage tax regime, and similarly favourable taxation on its oil activities.
“The sacking of 200 Danish seamen puts yet another question mark over AP Moller-Maersk’s special status,” it wrote. “How long should we pay billions of kroner in support to Denmark’s richest man?”
Despite his advanced age, Mc-Kinney Møller is still a highly active businessman. He personally owns brokerage firm Maersk Broker, a company that is expanding firmly.
Within the next two months it is set to open new offices in Dubai and Mumbai, according to the Lloyd's List daily. That will give it 15 offices.
