Strike threat brings 12 per cent wage rise at Maersk Contractors
A new collective bargaining agreement has resulted in a 12 per cent pay rise for 688 offshore workers at Maersk Contractors in Norway. Before the deal was signed, the parties were heading towards a dispute, but an agreement was reached before workers went on strike.
The result will net each worker an average annual rise of Nkr 60,000 (US$ 11,850), according to the Norwegian offshore union, Industri Energi.
Leif Sande of Industri Energi said: “We are satisfied that the strike has been avoided and that our members have won a good pay rise.” The union calls it “the best pay settlement of the year”. The union said it also forced the employers to withdraw their demands for alternative working patterns. It noted that the deal secured was almost identical to its final demand.
Working offshore in Norway without being covered by a Norwegian collective bargaining agreement is not allowed.
