The union federation FITTTAMPS has answered ITF’s call for intersectional cooperation. Its port worker members in Colón spread along different points in the city on 12 October and distributed more than 5,000 leaflets promoting this year’s campaign slogan on the need to be unionised. Their main target was bus and taxi drivers in the urban area and truck drivers getting to and leaving the city port. (Email report by Ana Beatriz Duarte)

(12:15 GMT) Uganda / Kenya
Following the activities at the truckstop on the Uganda / Kenya border of Malaba on 11 October, 2 officials from the Ugandan union, ATGWU together with two officials from the Kenya Long Distance Truck Drivers Welfare Association organised activities at the Busia border post, south of Malaba. These activities included leafleting and distribution of ITF and union materials. (Email report by Romano Ojiambo-Ochieng)

In addition to the mass rally of more than 1,500 workers and demonstrations in front of the Inspectorate of Dock Safety, Operation Service Centre on 13 October, the Transport & Dock Workers' Union, Mumbai organised gate meetings on 10-11 October to create awareness about fatigue from long working hours and the importance of ILO Convention 153. Meetings of core groups of activists were held at traffic islands and truck terminals to highlight the ITF Campaign and a procession of hundreds of transport workers was organised along arterial roads leading to the port gate. Banners were displayed on arterial roads, posters put up at port gates and container freight stations. Information on the ITF Campaign and participation of the union was also circulated to the media. Over 100 unorganised transport workers were signed as members during a union membership drive during the Campaign. (E-mail report by P.K Raman & Sangam Tripathy).
