Barbados
The Gender Equality Committee of the Barbados Workers' Union launched its campaign on 6th March, calling for the government to adopt ILO Convention 156: Workers with family responsibility. 

The union aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by working families, with the distribution of educational material and engaging in conversations with the general public.  The slogans to emphasise workers plight are ‘Work or Family: Is There a Choice’ and ‘Penalising Workers For Taking Their Family Responsibility is Seriously Discriminating’.            

The union also plans to take the campaign to workplaces on Monday 8 March, when they will also host a national radio broadcast.

Belgium
The Transport Union Belgische Transportarbeidersbond, attended a lecture on 8th March at the Provincial Government Building in Antwerp concerning UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.  The resolution is crucial for women in countries where there is conflict, reports where heard from women affected by the Palestine - Israel (the Gaza conflict), East Congo (Rwanda - Burundi) and Russia (Tjetjenia).   The grave issues that women and children in such areas face are violence, discrimination, abuse and extreme poverty.  The resolution is a valuable tool to strengthen the peace process and to improve equal rights,  opportunities and liberty for women around the world.
 
In addition, to mark the 100th year anniversary of International Women’s Day a dedicated statue was inaugurated at this event.

France
The Fédération Générale des Transports et de l'Equipement has organised an event at the confederation headquarters where a gathering of 250 members will take part in debates with sociologists, philosohers and researchers.  Afternoon activities will include a theatrical play and a celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.

India 
The All India Railway Federation is holding a seminar entitled “Union for Women & Women for Union”, the emphasis is to increase awareness on gender issues and increasing women’s participation.  

The South Central Railway Mazdoor Union organised a meeting on the 8th March.  The meeting was open to all members and was attended by several hundred participants, mostly women, ranging from railway workers and union leaders to company officials.  The talks stressed the need to protect rights gained through the many struggles of predecessors and the need to increase the empowerment of women in the trade union movement.   Women in leadership positions within the Railway sector such as Ms Maniben Kara, who attained the position of President of All India Railwaymen’s Federation, were acknowledged.  The meeting was followed by a cultural event which included singing and mime acts.

The National Federation of Indian Railwaymen is organising meetings, workshops and an awareness raising campaign to publicise work place achievements.  The workshops will include special empowerment programmes such as stress management and entertainment programmes for women.

The NFR Mazdoor Branch has organised a mass meeting for union members and a seminar.  This will be followed by a procession.

A rally has been organised by the Transport & Dock Workers' Union, where the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mumbai City, who are both women, will address the participants  on women’s empowerment.

Indonesia
A mass workplace awareness raising campaign is being launched by the Trade Union of Jakarta International Container Terminal and the Garuda Indonesian Flight Attendant Association.  They will distribute campaigning leaflets and education materials with the slogan “Your Union, Your Future”.
 
Italy 
The Federazione Italiana Trasporti  - CISL is holding it’s National Conference during this period and will be conducting a survey at national level.

Jordan
The General Union of Air Transport & Tourism organised a meeting with the chief executive officer of Royal Jordanian Airlines to demand; equal rights to health insurance for all workers and their families after retirement, rights for single and migrant workers to partner’s tickets and the right for women to wear trousers onboard.  In addition the union called for call centre workers hours to be reduced from 8 to 6 hours daily.   A request was also made to provide a safe and decent place for women’s prayer at the airport.

A commemoration dinner was held for cabin crew union members and their families, to mark the 8th March. 

Kenya 
The Dockworkers' Union of Kenya have organised an event to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS.  This will be done through workshops using role play and singing activities.

Mongolia
The Federation of Mongolian Railway Workers Trade Union is organising a series of events to include educational programmes, distribution of educational material and a meeting to highlight women workers issues and call for an increase in gender based activities.

Namibia 
The emphasis of Namibian Transport and Allied Workers' Union’s campaign will be on HIV/AIDS.   The union is holding a gathering for women by women,  with speakers from a range of professions in finance, clinical psychologists and business to raise awareness on women’s empowerment.

Nigeria 
The National Union of Air Transport Employees will be holding a series of events to include lectures on trade unionism, women’s health and will hold open debates, followed by a rally to raise awareness on women’s issues.  The union also plans a cultural display surrounding women’s issues and will record a music album.   Additionally the union has organised a visit to an orphanage to donate gifts.

Papua New Guinea
The Papua New Guinea Maritime Workers Industrial Union has planned a forum to discuss issues affecting women workers.

Russia
The Trade Union of Railwaymen and Transport Construction Workers of  Russia has organised a number of events and activities.  The union’s journals have dedicated articles covering the historical aspects of the trade union movement and women, with special features on women who juggle family, work and their active participation in the union.

Workplace talks were held throughout the railway sector organised by the Gender Equality Commission of the union.  The talks centered on the union's 8th March campaign goals, and the public consultation centres where further support on existing gender equality legislation can be obtained.

Discussions on the results of the ITF Worldwide Women Transport Workers' Conference and the preliminary document for the 42 ITF Congress titled “Women Transport Workers in the 21st Century” were also held.

Senegal
The aviation and dockers unions, Syndicat Unique des Transports Aériens du Sénégal, and Syndicat Autonome des Travailleurs du Port Autonome de Dakar, have organised a recruitment drive. Campaigning to raise awareness on the issues faced by women working in aviation and ports and fundraising activities are also planned.

South Africa
The South African Transport & Allied Workers' Union, is organising provincial activities targeting companies to improve workers' conditions. The activities will be followed by a march to deliver a memorandum of demands to employers demanding decent working conditions for women, as well as challenge the disparities in pay, occupation and employment.

Thailand
ITF affiliated unions working together as the Thai Coordinating Committee took part in a march to mark the event.

Togo
The dockers and seafarers’ union of Togo, SYNTRAPAL, has organised a number of activities.  The union will set up information stalls to explain the ITF’s work on organising women, will distribute educational materials and plan activities to sensitise  on HIV/AIDS to organising informal workers in the seaports and airports.

United Kingdom
The women’s committee from UNITE have organised an evening reception open to all union members. Keith Norman, general secretary of ASLEF will be opening the evening, Wendy Hurst, women’s committee secretary, ASLEF will be speaking about what IWD and its significance and Rachel Blaine from the children’s charity Plan International will be talking about their ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign.

Zimbabwe 
The Zimbabwe Amalgamated Railway Workers' Union in conjuction with the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions held a demonstration on equal opportunities for all workers.  Guest speakers include women union leaders, civic groups and parliamentary figures.
