Over recent years, airline traffic has grown enormously as services have been liberalised. But new staff have not been taken on to deal with the boom. Instead, European airports have been subjected to pressure from airlines (especially low-cost carriers) to be cheaper.
The pressure to offer ever-cheaper services has has led to a decline in employment conditions and an increase in the intensity of work.
Unions have identified reduced levels of staffing on the ground - often below agreed levels of service, as well as failures to coordinate safely air-side services prior to aircraft dispatch and an increase in the already disproportionate level of manual handling injuries for baggage handlers.
