ITF affiliates worldwide in cooperation with the ITUC and other Global Union federations (GUFs)have marked 25th November, UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with a collective and united trade union response in which we say NO to violence against women.

Why are we doing this?

Transport workers are vulnerable to physical and non-physical violence because of the jobs they do. Both women and men suffer from these conditions; however women transport workers are more vulnerable because of precarious employment conditions and occupational segregation. Women working at night and in customer services increasingly risk becoming victims of sexual harassment, abuse and rape which can in turn increase the risk of HIV/Aids and other infections.

The ITF's affiliated unions have campaigned for employers to take action to prevent violence in the workplace though establishing anti violence disciplinary systems, training and workplace sexual harassment policies.

ITF affiliates have also started to negotiate collective agreements that recognise domestic violence as a workplace issue, pressuring companies to provide access to medical support, counseling and sympathetic handling of requests for time off work, where necessary.

ITF affiliates also recognise that violence at work is not an individual problem; it has structural and systematic roots in wider social, economic, organisational and cultural factors. For this reason, affiliates are also campaigning for their governments to implement the UN treaties and ILO conventions to eliminate violence against women.

What can you do?

1. Let the ITF know about your union's progress in:

Negotiating and implementing effective agreements that place violence in the workplace on the health and safety agenda.
Negotiating and implementing polices that stop sexual harassment, bullying and violence in the workplace, and recognize domestic violence as a workplace issue
Campaigning with sister unions and NGO's on anti violence programmes

2. Let us know about any planned activities by your trade union organized to mark November 25, or email us on women@itf.org.uk. We will highlight your events and pictures on the ITF website.

3. Order the 'No to violence against women' campaign ribbon and the 'Use your voice against violence' calendar, complete and return Annex 2 or email us on women@itf.org.uk . These materials are available in English, French and Spanish.
