ETF Campaign for Job Security
We are seriously concerned that although the European Commission pays lip service to social concerns, its policies continue to attack labour and social stability. This stance appeared once again in recent discussions over the possible revision of the 1996 Ground Handling Directive (96/67).
Directive 96/67 damaged job quality, employment, ground staff working conditions, and airport safety standards. Now further changes are planned, and we risk the situation getting worse. The current proposals will see training levels fall, staff turnover increasing and staff shortages. More subcontractors in the sector mean less transparency, less service, more fragmentation - and more safety risks. European citizens deserve better.
The ETF, and its affiliated transport trade unions, are demanding that the Commission immediately withdraws its attempts to increase liberalisation of the ground handling sector, that it consult unions to improve the current situation and that it set up working groups to draft legislation on transfer of staff for all European workers.
