Zambia
On 7 October, union representatives from the Kitwe district marched from a terminal bus station to the civic centre of this second largest city in Zambia where a senior government official addressed them. Approximately 70 drivers and conductors took part in the demonstration. On 6 October, the President of the Zambian Bus & Taxi Workers' Union took part in a radio interview to explain the ITF Action Week and the important role of transport workers as well as to highlight the major issues that are affecting them. (Phone report by Gabriel Tembo)
Spain
The road transport sector of CC.OO has participated in the different mobilisations organised for the World Day for Decent Work in all the provincial capitals in Spain including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, León, Zaragoza and Seville, and has also pledged its support to a manifesto that has been signed by more than 200 social, union and political organisations. Additionally, the CC.OO has produced various documents about the International Road Transport Action Week for distribution to its members and workers which review and reflect on the union demands as well as the achievements over the last 12 years as part of the ITF campaign. The union has also been successful in getting working groups established with the Traffic, Labour and Transport authorities to look at accidents for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes for professional transport workers and other groups of work. In many provinces the union has also coincided their collective bargaining negotiations with the Action Week. (Email report by Juan Luis Garcia Revuelta)
Baltic States
12 union activists from the Lithuanian Transport Workers' Federation, the Estonian Transport & Road Workers Trade (ETTA) Union and other regional transport trade unions not affiliated to the ITF met during the night of 8 October at parking places on the Via Baltica highway near Kaunas in Lithuania to talk to drivers about their working conditions. Unfortunately due to wet weather it was not possible for drivers to complete the planned questionnaire on conditions at the parking facilities that was prepared in 6 languages, however the team plans to try again next week when the weather will hopefully be better. (Phone and email report by Janina Malinovska)
Bulgaria
The Federation of Transport Trade Unions in Bulgaria has prepared a poster locally about decent work which has been displayed on buses alongside the ITF Action Week poster in seven major cities around the country so that bus passengers will become aware of the campaign. In Sofia, the government-operated buses are carrying the posters in order to highlight the campaign within the capital city. On 13 October, a media campaign is planned and an ETF delegation of union representatives will meet with 50 of the union's bus driver members to exchange ideas and experiences. (Phone report by Slava Petrova)
Austria
On 6 October, ITF affiliate Vida participated in a panel discussion, organised by the Austrian Federal Chamber Of Labour, the Austrian Trade Union Federation and various trade unions, which looked at the consequences of worsening terms of employment, lower wages and low social and environmental standards. The work and campaigns of the ITF were presented. The union highlighted the example of transit traffic where poor working hours dominate throughout Europe. Social dumping by the employers was raised in the meeting and the importance of trade unions to work together worldwide to combat these issues was emphasised. (Email report by Sylvia Tatra)
