The ITF affiliates worldwide have marked the 25th November, UN day for the elimination of violence against women for several years.

Why are we doing this?

Transport workers are vulnerable to physical and non-physical violence because of the jobs they do.  Both women and men suffer from these factors, nevertheless women are vulnerable in different ways, both because they often handle customer relations and because working alone or at night as well as traveling to and from work at night can mean they are in danger from sexually motivated attacks.

Security and freedom from violence and harassment were found to be of utmost concern in a recent health and safety survey conducted on women road transport workers safety. Download the survey in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

Many of the ITF’s affiliated unions have also been working on issues of domestic violence, and on ways that those suffering from violence can be given help in the workplace. This includes unions arguing for access to medical support and counseling, as well as ensuring confidentiality of cases and sympathetic handling of requests for time off work, where necessary.
