ITF Job Description
JOB TITLE: Women Transport Workers’ Coordinator
RESPONSIBLE FOR: Promoting women’s participation and gender awareness throughout the ITF
REPORTS TO: General Secretary
Main purpose of role:
- As a member of the Strategic Coordination Team (SCT), contribute to the research, development and implementation of strategies and policies across all Sections, Departments and Regions to assist in achieving the organisation’s strategic and operational objectives
- Develop, lead, coordinate, manage and monitor on issues related to organising women transport workers
- Develop, lead, coordinate, manage and monitor specific activities, programmes and projects where those relate to building stronger unions through gender work and women’s involvement
- Ensure the promotion of women’s involvement and awareness of gender perspectives across the whole of the ITF
- Promote mutual respect and equality across the ITF
Specific duties and responsibilities:
- As a member of the SCT lead, develop and contribute to the coordination of strategies and policies for the whole organisation
- Work with affiliates to promote women’s active participation in all transport trade unions
- Work to ensure the specific social and economic conditions affecting women throughout the transport industry are recognised, that occupational segregation is challenged and reduced, and that innovative gender equality measures are pursued
- Service the activities agreed by the ITF Women Transport Workers’ Committee and Conference to promote women transport workers’ involvement and gender perspectives across the ITF’s key programmes, and implement the decisions and policies developed
- Lead and manage the work of the Women’s Department to ensure there is effective coordination in delivering work solutions and outcomes
- Ensure that the Women’s Department is resourced with staff who are trained or who are being developed and who are managed and motivated so that strategic and operational objectives are achieved
- Ensure an activities plan is prepared and its progress monitored to ensure objectives are attained as efficiently as possible
- Prepare and gain acceptance and monitor the implementation of the annual budget to ensure agreed budget figures are not exceeded, expenditure is in line with plan and that fixed and variable costs are closely monitored.
- Ensure that in all transactions risk management issues are identified and addressed to fully protect the interests of the ITF
- Provide strategic advice and guidance to the Strategic Coordination Team on all areas of ITF key work programmes as well as on developments in the Women’s work programme.
- Work across departments, regions and sections to ensure women’ participation and gender perspectives are prioritised and implemented via monitoring
- Work with the Global Unions family on relevant policy and campaigning issues
- Ensure that all ITF planning, campaigning and organising initiatives promote women and/or gender perspectives
- Work with external partner organisations on women’s activities to develop campaigns, lobbying and solidarity strategies.
Personal Specification:
- Senior level experience in the areas of women/gender perspectives within an organisation with trade union, political, environmental, development or other social justice objectives.
- Senior level strategic management experience, preferably in an international environment
- Knowledge of the transport industry
- Education to a degree level or equivalent
- Demonstrable trade union leadership skills, organisational ability, policy development and implementation, resource management and teambuilding skills, appropriate for operating in an international environment
- Proven written and verbal communication skills, demonstrable political awareness and advocacy skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience of developing, implementing and monitoring strategic and operational plans
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide range of people and to negotiate with and influence them, using a consultative approach
- The ability at all times to exercise discretion, diplomacy, judgement and initiative
- Commitment to social justice and trade unions
