- About these links
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Antonios Maounis, ITF Inspector in Greece, on 11 April 2009, following a sudden heart attack.
Antonios started his career at sea as a purser cadet in 1970. He worked with the two most important Greek Cruise Companies at the time, Chandris and Carras, where he first had exposure to an international environment.
As Antonios’ career progressed he became Chief Purser and his dedication to trade union issues led him to take up an official position within the Pursers’ Union. He was the General Secretary and Chairman of the Pursers' Union in Greece from 1992 to 2004.
When a position for an ITF Inspector become available, Antonios applied, supported by the Maritime Unions of Greece. He approached the job of Inspector with passion and dedication and provided invaluable support for all his colleagues in the Inspectorate who had problems with Greek controlled vessels.
Antonios was a committed and valued member of the ITF Inspectorate and will be sorely missed.
Antonios leaves his wife and two young daughters of 16 and 12.
| My deepest sympathies to the family of Antonios Maounis. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time. My father is Robert Dean, he was an ITF Inspector from Portland, Oregon who also passed suddenly from a heart attack in 1998. My family and I miss him dearly everyday and understand the grief and sadness you feel. I wish you all the comfort and support of family and friends during this difficult time. | Though I met Antonios briefly, I was quite impressed by his passion for the work he did as an ITF Inspector. His words "I get good good sound sleep in the nights when I help a seafarer in whatever way possible" are still embedded in my mind.... important words said by a true trade unionist, a well wisher of seafarers of the worlds. May his soul rest in peace and heartfelt condolences to his near and dear ones... Abdulgani Y. Serang General Secretary, National Union of Seafarers of India. |
| I have been shocked when listening from my colleague John Xalas the president of PNO Greece that our good friend ANTONIS MAOUNIS has died. I have no words to explain how nice and smiled person was Antonis. Please convey my condolences to his wife and his two daughters. Pantelis Stavrou General Secretary, FTPAW Cyprus. |
