"Everyone in the ITF was very shocked to hear of Karin's death.  She was a real internationalist,  both in her early days working within the transport section of the OTV and supporting Eike Eulen both before and after he was elected ITF President in 1994, and subsequently when she joined the international and european department of the German national centre the DGB.

Even while working within the DGB, with special expertise in the Baltic states and Central and Eastern Europe, and as Vice President of the Workers' Group of the EU Economic and Social Committee, she never forgot her 'transport roots' and we often used to talk over the old ITF days. While at the OTV she always insisted that the German trade union movement had to play a major part in mobilising solidarity within the ITF.  She will be sadly missed by the many trade unionists around the world with which she established long lasting relations.
" -David Cockroft, General Secretary, ITF.

Karin Alleweldt obituary

It was a long struggle against a cruel illness, but in the end she had to give in. Karin Alleweldt passed away on February 19th , accompanied in her final hours by her family and close friends.

Karin dedicated her entire professional life to the cause of the German trade union movement.

In 1992, she started working with the former services union ÖTV, where she was responsible for Common Transport Policy.

In 1996, she joined the staff of DGB, where the European Transport Policy became her field of work.

In the year 2001, Karin became a political officer in the DGB’s department of International and European Trade Union Policy. Here she was in charge of our relations to the fraternal organisations in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. She accompanied the various processes of European enlargement and was a key protagonist of the establishment of the Baltic Sea network of trade union cooperation.

Karin represented the DGB in various International and European institutions, among them also the European Economic and Social Committee, where she was a member since 2002.

Karin was a European by conviction, highly esteemed not only by her German trade union colleagues but also by the numerous political partners in our Eastern neighbouring countries.

We will miss Karin badly. She is leaving a painful gap in the European trade union policy of the DGB.

All DGB colleagues of Karin will remember her always with thankfulness and respect. We express our deepest sympathies to her family and her loved ones.

19th of February, 2008

-Michael Sommer, President Confederation of German Trade Unions
