The ITF is sad to announce the death of Brother Francis Mungroo.
Francis started his career as a seaman; his first outing at sea was with the Saguenay Shipping Company Limited, where he organised the crew members to join the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union (SWWTU) in Trinidad.
He was given a job as a messenger with SWWTU, where he was very active in his branch affairs and soon become its Chairman. From there he moved to the position of National Officer, Trustee, until he was elected 3rd Vice President of the SWWTU. He masterminded the plans for the affiliation with the Seafarers International Union of North America, which proved a success. He served as Assistant Secretary General for a short term, was then elected Secretary General and finally became President of the SWWTU, a position he held until he himself left office.
Francis had close links with the ITF, and he became a member of the Executive Board in 1998, serving until the Vancouver Congress in 2002. He will be sadly missed.
