Michalis Zenzefyllis, former PNO general secretary, has died. Born in Ismailia, Egypt, in 1923, Michalis went to sea in 1951 and was elected as general secretary of the Pan-Hellenic Union of Masters and Mates in 1979. Later he was elected vice president.

In 1983 he was chosen as PNO (Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation) general secretary and re-elected five years later. In this role he sat on various committees established under the auspices of the Ministry of Merchant Marine dealing with seafarers’ working conditions, social security and pension-related matters. In his capacity as general secretary he was the ex-officio President of the Seafarers’ Welfare Institution, and also served as a member of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) Board from 1983-1993.

After retiring, he served for some years as adviser to the Minister of Merchant Marine.

Michalis Zenzefyllis was a member of the ITF fair practices committee and actively participated in seafarers’ section conferences and subsidiary bodies. He also participated in ILO meetings and was a titular member of the ILO Joint Maritime Commission (JMC).

ITF general secretary David Cockroft said: “I knew Michael at the beginning of my time in the ITF. He was a strong defender of Greek seafarers and a major participant in ITF activities, and helped to give the PNO the strong position it has within the ITF family today.”
