The ITF is very sorry to report that Manohar Kotwal passed away on 29 November 2011. Manohar passed away at the age of 96 following a few months of illness. From 1962- 1967 he was general secretary of Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), the third largest trade-union federation in India,  Manohar Kotwal was also secretary and senior vice president of Transport and Dock Workers' Union, TDWU, chair of the ITF's Asia Pacific dockers' section and member of the ITF’s Fair Practice Committee.

David Cockroft, ITF general secretary described Monhar Kotwal: "He was an inspiring figure for the Indian and the global trade union movement, he was so committed to the ITF family that I know he only stopped attending ITF dockers' section meetings when he was not allowed to travel for medical reasons.  He will be sadly missed by all in the ITF."

Paddy Crumlin, ITF president said: "Brother Kotwal was a dignified courageous progressive and tireless advocate and activist for the Indian Dockworkers and broader international labour movement he devoted his life to. He inspired his members and international workers to continue to fight for labour and social justice and a truly democratic and representative trade union movement.

He was greatly loved and respected and will be equally missed

. Together with the General Secretary I wish to express my personal deepest condolences to the Kotwal family and to the members officers and staff of the union on behalf the International Transport workers and the ITF affiliates that represent them. Vale Comrade, now at rest."
