In Memory: Juma Khamis
Juma Khamis, ITF inspector and former General Secretary of the Kenyan Dockworkers’ Union has died aged 61.
Juma was an inspector of police for the Kenyan police force after leaving school until he resigned due to his parent’s ill health and joined the Kenyan Cargo Handling Service. It was while working there as a manager that he was invited to stand for the post of General Secretary of the Dockworkers’ Union Kenya. That was in 1988 and he held the position for 13 years before resigning, during which he acted as Chair for the African Region for the ITF.
Three years after leaving the union he took on the job of ITF inspector, based in Mombasa, and he worked in that role from 2003 until his death last month.
