We are sorry to announce the untimely death in a car accident of Juan Manuel Palacios, former ITF executive board member (1998 to 2006), and for two decades the secretary general of Argentina’s UTA (Unión Tranviarios Automotor).  He will also be remembered for his founding role in the MTA, the Movimiento de Trabajadores Argentinos.

Juan Manuel Palacios was buried this week in La Plata. His funeral was attended by other trade union leaders. Hugo Moyano, secretary general of the CGT, Argentina’s trade union centre, described him as “a good man who fought all his life for the rights of workers”.

Alicia Castro, a member of the ITF executive Board and former general secretary of the Asociación Argentina de Aeronavegantes said: "He was a militant union leader. In the most difficult times he also knew to make a sober and constructive reflection. We founded the MTA to promote an alternative model, as opposed to the degradation of social and trade union rights that in the 1990's tried to impose labor flexibility as the ‘only way’. Juan’s death is a painful loss for the labor movement."

ITF general secretary David Cockroft added: “Although Juan’s first priority was always the defence of public transport workers in Argentina, throughout his time as the head of the union he retained a keen understanding of international issues and often provided vital support for our work in Latin America. He will be sadly missed.”

A short film in his memory, made by his colleagues, can be seen below:
