As you all know through the Global HIV/AIDS and Transport Workers' Project we are trying to develop a trade union perspective of our struggle against HIV/AIDS. We are committed to implement a coordinated campaign both at national and international level and facilitate a process where transport unions all over the world will play an important role to reduce the vulnerability of transport workers and their families by activating their existing capacities as well as building new capacities.

The context and intensity of the HIV epidemic is quite unique in every country around the globe. There may be some specific issues that are more important in one country or in one union but which are not that important in another country. To develop a comprehensive program, we need to map out the level of awareness of our affiliated unions, how HIV/AIDS affects your union and your past and present involvement in HIV/AIDS initiatives. We also need to know the activities going on in your country either implemented by the government or by other organizations to prevent a HIV epidemic among transport workers.

To gather all this information, the ITF has conducted a HIV/AIDS mapping exercise in 2006-7 among its affiliates. This report is based on 97 responses that we have received from affiliates, of which 40 are from Asia Pacific, 31 from Africa, 11 from Europe, 13 from Latin America and the Caribbean and 2 from the Arab world. This response also coincides with the high HIV/AIDS prevalence in the African and Asian regions and very low prevalence in the Arab world.

The mapping results confirm that HIV/AIDS affects our sectors seriously; it also shows that our affiliated unions have started taking action to control the epidemic. What we need to do is to intensify our effort and energy to make an effective impact at a political, industrial and at workplace level.
